Shri Bitri Basyrngaid having the family of seven members was deriving livelihood from his farm of 2.2 ha located in village Pyndengumiong Mairang, block Mairang (44 km from Shillong) in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya and had been in this profession for the last 30 years. West and South West Khasi Hills districts in Meghalaya state are dominated by tribal population having agriculture as their main livelihood. Sohphlang is a small plant with edible roots or tuber like fruit scientifically known as Flemingia vestita and has been used traditionally as an anthelmintic (that expel parasitic worms on human), the basis of which is scientifically validated. The delicate skin is easily peeled off to expose a smooth cream-coloured flesh that has a sweet, nut-like flavour. In terms of nutritional value, it is particularly rich in phosphorus and proteins.
